GILBERTS, Ill. — Firefighter Greg Witt of the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District has died following a medical emergency he suffered during training last week.
The district announced the training incident and Witt’s death on social media. Witt was hospitalized after the emergency occurred Wednesday, Oct. 21. The details about the incident were not released.
“Greg was a member of our family,” Chief Christopher Reedy wrote. “He served his country as a Marine and served this community as a firefighter, and he did both with honor. Our hearts are with Greg’s family, and with every member of this department who served alongside him. We ask that everyone give them the time and space they need to grieve.”
Witt, a U.S. Marine veteran, had been with the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District since January 2019.
