We are approaching the highlights of Carnival in Cape Verde. We are greeted by a surprise this morning: the view across the bay is so hazy that the opposite shore is indistinguishable. Saharan dust hangs in the air. This weather phenomenon is called Bruma Seca here. Today, the Mandingas are the stars of the parades. With their eerie appearance and wild dances, they impress the audience. This tradition is inspired by West African warriors and their behavior during battles. The goal was to distract the enemy and launch a surprise attack when they least expected it. Although the Mandingas may appear frightening, they are actually friendly and harmless. This is evident from the fact that not only adult warriors, but also children and older people participate in the parades. It’s wonderful to see how much the carnival inspires people of all ages. However, it is not always easy for outsiders to recognize the groups performing. Der Morgen beginnt für uns mit einer Überraschung: Der Ausblick über die Bucht ist so stark getrübt, dass das gegenüberliegende Ufer nicht zu erkennen ist. Saharastaub liegt in der Luft. Dieses Wetterphänomen wird hier Bruma Seca genannt. Heute stehen die Mandingas im Mittelpunkt der Paraden. Mit ihrem schaurigen Aussehen und ihren wilden Tänzen beeindrucken sie das Publikum. Diese Tradition ist von westafrikanischen Kriegern und deren Verhalten bei Kämpfen mit den Gegnern inspiriert. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Gegner abzulenken und dann überraschend anzugreifen, wenn diese nicht damit rechnen. Auch wenn die Mandingas teilweise furchterregend aussehen, sind sie in Wirklichkeit sehr freundlich und harmlos. Das ist auch daran erkennbar, dass nicht nur erwachsene Krieger, sondern auch Kinder und ältere Personen an den Paraden teilnehmen. Es ist wunderbar zu sehen, wie sehr der Karneval Menschen jeden Alters inspiriert. Allerdings ist es für Außenstehende nicht immer einfach, die auftretenden Gruppen zu erkennen.
