During our short visit to Cebu, we visited a charming little bookstore that instantly transported me to another world. Tucked away along Osmeña Boulevard, Lost Books Cebu may be small in size, but it holds an enormous passion for literature, local culture, and community.

For avid book lovers, passionate writers, talented artists, and inquisitive explorers, Lost Books Cebu is more than just a bookstore—it is a serene literary sanctuary quietly nestled in plain sight, inviting discovery and inspiring imagination.

A Hidden Gem Along Osmeña Boulevard

Lost Books Cebu is located on the ground floor of the CAO Mercado Building along Osmeña Boulevard in Capitol Site, Cebu City, directly across from Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital. Despite its central location, it is easy to miss at first glance. Its modest storefront blends into the busy urban landscape, making the discovery feel like finding a secret known only to fellow book lovers.

The moment I stepped inside, the noise of the city seemed to fade away. The scent of books filled the air, shelves lined the walls, and every corner invited me to slow down and browse. It felt less like a commercial bookstore and more like a cozy reading room created by people who genuinely love books.

How Lost Books Cebu Began

The story behind Lost Books Cebu is just as inspiring as the books it sells.

The bookstore was co-founded by Cebuano writer, publisher, and literary advocate Donald Villamero, along with fellow book enthusiasts who shared a dream of creating an independent bookstore dedicated to local literature and community building. Villamero, who also founded DCO Publishing, has long championed Visayan writers and independent publishing. The bookstore grew from a childhood dream of opening a space where readers, writers, and artists could gather around a shared love for stories.

What makes the story even more fascinating is the location itself. The space previously housed an abandoned bank ATM kiosk near the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Instead of seeing a cramped and forgotten corner, the founders saw potential. They transformed the tiny area into what is now considered one of Cebu’s most unique independent bookstores.

The result is a bookstore that proves you don’t need thousands of square feet to create something meaningful.

A Celebration of Cebuano and Filipino Literature

One of the things that immediately impressed me was the bookstore’s commitment to promoting local voices.

While international bestsellers and classic novels are available, Lost Books Cebu shines brightest through its collection of Cebuano and Filipino literature. The shelves feature works by Visayan authors, independent publishers, poets, and storytellers whose books are often difficult to find in mainstream bookstores.

As I browsed the shelves, I discovered poetry collections, local history books, creative nonfiction, and novels written in both Cebuano and English. For readers interested in understanding the culture, identity, and stories of the Visayas, this place offers a literary journey that few bookstores can match.

It was truly invigorating to see local writers finally receive the recognition they deserve, shining in the spotlight that showcases their unique voices. I hope to see more unique bookstores like this across the country, fostering closer connections between readers and talented local authors.

What to Expect Inside

Although it’s one of the smallest bookstores I’ve visited, Lost Books Cebu provides a surprisingly rich experience.

The shelves contain a carefully curated mix of new and secondhand books. Every title seems intentionally chosen rather than simply stocked. The collection ranges from contemporary fiction and literary classics to history, poetry, philosophy, and children’s books.

The bookstore also functions as a cozy café. Visitors can enjoy coffee, juices, and light snacks while reading. During my visit, I noticed people quietly browsing books, sipping coffee, and spending hours immersed in stories. It felt like a place where time slows down.

Another unique feature is its library-style borrowing system and bookbinding services. The owners aim to recreate the charm of old libraries by allowing members to borrow books through a subscription program. They also offer book restoration and binding services, helping preserve treasured books for future generations.

Adding even more character to the space are artworks, postcards, stickers, and creative merchandise from local artists. The bookstore serves as a platform not only for writers but also for Cebu’s growing creative community.

More Than a Bookstore

What struck me most during my visit wasn’t the books themselves—it was the atmosphere.

Lost Books Cebu feels like a community hub where conversations about literature happen naturally. It hosts readings, meetups, and events that bring together writers, artists, students, and readers. In a world increasingly dominated by screens and short attention spans, the bookstore offers something rare: a place where people can slow down, connect, and engage with ideas.

Every independent bookstore reflects its founders’ personalities, and Lost Books Cebu radiates a genuine love for storytelling and culture. It isn’t trying to compete with giant bookstore chains. Instead, it focuses on creating meaningful experiences for those who walk through its doors.

Why You Should Visit

As someone who enjoys discovering unique places while traveling, I found Lost Books Cebu to be one of the most memorable stops in the city.

Whether you’re a lifelong bibliophile, an aspiring writer, a student searching for inspiration, or simply someone looking for a quiet escape from Cebu’s busy streets, this little bookstore deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Its shelves tell stories, but so does the bookstore itself—a story about passion, community, and the belief that books still matter.

In a city known for its historic landmarks, bustling food scene, and vibrant urban life, Lost Books Cebu reminds us that some of the most meaningful discoveries happen in the smallest spaces. I walked in expecting a bookstore. I left feeling like I had discovered a hidden chapter of Cebu’s creative soul.
