Adrian Volunteer Firefighter Gary Wayne James was ejected after losing control of a brush truck on a curve while responding to a truck fire

OLDHAM COUNTY, Texas — A volunteer firefighter was killed when a brush truck rolled while he was responding to a truck fire near Adrian.

Adrian Volunteer Firefighter Gary Wayne James, 80, was driving west on the Interstate 40 service road when the crash occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Aug. 3, ABC 7 News reported.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said James entered a curve at an unsafe speed, lost control of the brush truck and rolled.

James was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to DPS. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The city of Adrian said the community was mourning James, whom was described as a dedicated firefighter.

“A small town has a way of becoming one big family, and today we all grieve together,” the city stated. “We mourn the loss of a beloved firefighter who gave so much in service to others.”

The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
