ODESSA, Texas — Odessa Fire Rescue is mourning the death of Lt. Isai Huerta, who was injured while battling a trailer fire.

According to the city of Odessa, firefighters responded around 4:59 p.m. on June 14 to a trailer fire in the 1900 block of South Westcliff. Officials said conditions deteriorated while crews were operating at the scene, injuring three firefighters.

All three were transported to Medical Center Hospital. Huerta, 29, died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The two other firefighters injured in the incident suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving treatment and support, officials said.

“Isai was a huge part of our organization, a true firefighter,” Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton said in a statement. “He was always happy, always willing to help, and he truly enjoyed the job. Our department is in need of prayer, guidance, and grace as we navigate moving forward. We grieve alongside Isai’s family and ask our community to keep them and our firefighters in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Texas State Association of Fire Fighters will lead the investigation, with additional support from the International Association of Fire Fighters, NewsWest 9 reported.

Odessa Fire Rescue has begun debriefing personnel and ensuring first responders have access to emotional, mental health and peer support resources.
