Yesterday afternoon at 1:20pm my phone lit up with messages from Julie Hanify and Stephen Tirone. A peregrine fledgling with a yellow band was on the ground in front of the library and a bunch of crows were shouting at her. Yellow was in the midst of her first big adventure.
It looks like she’s shouting too but she might just be cooling off with her mouth open.

Stephen Tirone saw what happened:
When I arrived on my bike she was hanging upside down on the lowest limb of a Sycamore and four crows were all over her. They were really attacking her! I wasn’t sure she would take off from the ground, but an oblivious pedestrian came close, and she hopped up and flew away strongly. She is going to remember that, I think!
— email from Stephen Tirone on 8 June 2026Though we didn’t know it, Yellow had already been flying for a few days. Yesterday she decided to fly across Forbes Avenue to the next big building: Carnegie Museum and Library. What she didn’t realize is:
- Fish crows are nesting in the London plane trees (sycamores) next to the Library and
- Yellow’s mother Carla has been seriously harassing the crows in that area. I wrote on 6 June:
As we were packing up at the end of Fledge Watch (Friday 5 June), Carla suddenly dove like a bullet right over our heads and disappeared behind the trees. Seconds ticked by and then she flew out with two crows in pursuit. Hah! Of course they couldn’t catch her.
Crows don’t forget their enemies so when a naive young peregrine showed up near their nest it was payback time.
Yellow will certainly remember this adventure!
