“Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower” focuses on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires

June 15, 2026 04:58 PM •

QUINCY, Mass. — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has unveiled the official theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026: “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

The annual campaign, which will run from Oct. 4-10, focuses on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. This is the second year the annual campaign will focus on lithium-ion battery fires.

The NFPA’s Fire Prevention Week resource center spotlights Six Safety Tips related to lithium-ion batteries, and offers printable and digital media assets that fire departments can use to help spread the safety message in their communities.

Additionally, NFPA’s Aug. 13 webinar “Safe Charging Is a Superpower: Plug into the Why Behind the 2026 FPW Theme!” details why NFPA chose a battery-related theme for FPW for the second year in a row, explains the science and fire risks of lithium-ion batteries, describes ways lithium-ion batteries can be damaged, offers safe charging tips for devices that are powered by lithium-ion batteries, and provides the latest Educational Messages Advisory Committee (EMAC)–approved language related to lithium-ion battery safety messaging.

Fire Prevention Week is observed annually during the week of October 9 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It is the longest-running public health observance in the United States.

More information and campaign resources will be made available at www.firepreventionweek.org.
