A major magnitude 7.6 earthquake today struck offshore of northern Japan, generating a tsunami, and causing the ground to shake for 30 seconds. Alongside this, an advisory was issued which warned of an increased likelihood of an even larger megathrust earthquake occurring from one of the offshore megathrust zones. However, this advisory is not a prediction or even a forecast, merely meaning a still very low but temporarily increased chance that a magnitude 8.0 or larger earthquake could strike there.
