The newly appointed energy secretary has insisted her department's pledge to scrap VAT on electricity bills isn't unfunded. It follows a growing row over whether the money has been allocated to pay for the scheme. Number 10 has said the pledge is "fully funded" and will be paid for with the money that was meant to be used on the previous government's digital ID scheme. But the former minister behind that project, Darren Jones, said this morning that the programme was "unfunded". Speaking to Sky News, Miatta Fahnbulleh says: "Listen, the OBR [Office for Budget Responsibility] costed the digital ID scheme at £1.8bn. And that was going to be covered by departments basically chipping in and making their contribution. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch told Cathy Newman that the announcement was already "falling apart" in light of Jones' comments.
