Researchers from The University of Manchester and the Natural History Museum reached the conclusion after revisiting fossils that had remained in museum collections for more than 150 years.
The animal, Praearcturus gigas, reached roughly one meter in length and carried pincers more than 16 centimeters long. Around 415 million years ago, it would have been an imposing predator in the floodplain environments of the Early Devonian.
A study published in Palaeontology used modern analytical methods and comparisons with more recently described fossil species to determine that Praearcturus was a scorpion and represented a distinct species.
A Giant From Before the Age of Trees
Dr. Richard J. Howard, Curator of Fossil Arthropods at the Natural History Museum, London, and lead author of the study, said: "When we think of giant arthropods, people often picture Carboniferous rainforests with giant millipedes or dragonfly-like insects from later in Earth's history. But Praearcturus lived at least 50 million years earlier, well before the evolution of trees, when life on land was only just getting started.
"Confirming that this animal is a scorpion fundamentally changes our understanding of how and when these creatures evolved to such extraordinary sizes."
The discovery pushes the story of giant arthropods much further back in time than the period usually associated with enormous insects and other invertebrates.
Dr. Russell Garwood, Paleontologist at The University of Manchester, added: "Praearcturus has puzzled us paleontologists for more than a century. By bringing together material from several collections and using cutting-edge imaging techniques, we've been able to build a clearer picture of the animal than was previously possible, which is really exciting.
"What makes Praearcturus so interesting is that it became enormous at a time when life on land was otherwise very small. But it was a world that could somehow support a giant predator. To try and better understand this ancient world, we compared the size of fossil scorpions with other animals alive at the time. To reach such extraordinary sizes, and conclude that perhaps it lived in water, where life was bigger."
Why Did This Scorpion Grow So Large?
Praearcturus gigas lived during the Early Devonian, when terrestrial ecosystems were still in their infancy. Small plants and fungi had only recently begun spreading across the landscape, while forests and other complex land ecosystems had not yet developed.
That timing is important because Praearcturus lived before the high atmospheric oxygen levels associated with the later rise of forests. Those oxygen-rich conditions have often been linked to the enormous size of some later arthropods.
Instead, the researchers suggest that ecological opportunity may help explain the animal's extraordinary size. With few other large predators competing for resources, Praearcturus may have been able to dominate its environment in a way that became much harder once terrestrial ecosystems grew more crowded and complex.
A Scorpion That May Have Lived in Water
The fossils also provide clues that Praearcturus may have spent part of its life in aquatic environments. Some specimens preserve flap-like structures on the abdomen resembling features seen in modern crustaceans such as lobsters, raising the possibility that the giant scorpion could move between water and land.
An analysis of the broader arachnid fossil record, led by Dr. Garwood and the team, also found that scorpions are unusually common in rocks from this period compared with other arachnids. That pattern supports the possibility that some early scorpions occupied freshwater environments, where their remains would have had a greater chance of being preserved as fossils.
This places Praearcturus at an especially important stage in Earth's history, when animals were beginning to explore habitats beyond the oceans.

Dr. Greg Edgecombe, Merit Researcher at the Natural History Museum, London, and co-author of the study, said: "The boundary between land and sea was much less defined at this time. Praearcturus gives us a fascinating glimpse into how early animals adapted to these changing environments.
"It may even represent a lineage that returned to the water after earlier ancestors had already begun living on land."
A 150 Year Fossil Mystery
Scientists first described Praearcturus gigas in 1871, but at the time it was interpreted as a giant crustacean resembling a woodlouse. The fossils were incomplete and lacked important anatomical features, including a tail, which made confident identification difficult for more than a century.
The new interpretation became possible after researchers compared the historic specimens with better preserved fossils discovered more recently. Those newer remains revealed anatomical traits found specifically in scorpions, giving scientists the evidence needed to reassess Praearcturus.
The finding also demonstrates how older museum specimens can continue to produce major discoveries long after they were first collected.
Dr. Howard added: "Specimens collected over a century ago can still hold entirely new insights. By revisiting them with modern techniques, we can uncover discoveries that reshape our understanding of life on Earth."
Rethinking Prehistoric Arthropod Gigantism
Finding such an enormous scorpion so early in the history of terrestrial life challenges traditional ideas about why prehistoric arthropods sometimes evolved to gigantic sizes.
The results suggest that high oxygen levels and other environmental conditions may not have been the only factors involved. Ecological opportunity, particularly the absence of competing large predators, may also have allowed animals such as Praearcturus to reach remarkable sizes.
